Sterling jewelry
Sterling jewelry can be cleaned fairly easily, but it
is important that the instructions for cleaning are followed with exactness.
By following the directions correctly, the sterling jewelry will be
cleaned most effectively.
To clean the jewelry, a person should:
• Remove a large pot and some aluminum foil from the kitchen cabinets.
The pot should be lined with the aluminum foil. It is in this area that
the sterling jewelry will be cleaned.
• After the pot has been completely lined with the aluminum foil,
some baking soda, salt and warm water need to be added inside of it.
In order to make sure the mixture cleans effectively, it should be stirred
by something that is not made of metal. A plastic spoon should work
well.
• Then, all of the sterling jewelry should be added into the pot
one at a time. A person should make sure that he or she knows how many
pieces of jewelry go into the pot. Because smaller pieces of jewelry
can stick to the aluminum foil, they might be thrown out along with
the aluminum foil if the person doing the cleaning is not careful. Earrings
especially need to be checked on.
• Next, the mixture in the pot needs to be brought to a low boil.
This water should not boil very long. About five minutes is as long
as the jewelry should be left in the boiling water. Do not boil for
too much longer than this or a person could affect the quality of his
or her jewelry.
• Remove the pot from the heat. Wait for the solution to cool
and then use a strainer or colander to pour out the contents of the
pot. The sterling jewelry can be rinsed with fresh water.
